Tastemaker Tour with Brighton Keller

We’ve long been fans of Brighton Keller, style maven behind her eponymous blog Brighton the Day. While fashion is her forte, Brighton's inspiring aesthetic knows no bounds, just look at her beautiful bedroom! Today we are chatting with Brighton about her thoughts on creating a space that is as pulled together as the perfect ensemble.

As Instagram addicts, we quickly found that your mom, Dee Keller, has a killer knack for designing interiors (in addition to her gorgeous shoe line). Has her interior décor savvy helped you in designing your own spaces?

Absolutely! I essentially ran everything by her when it came to decorating my room. She has the best taste and she's always able to pull a room together no matter the style! In this space, the headboard was her idea and she helped me navigate the process of getting it custom made since I wanted such an oversized, statement-making look!

(Our blush brushstroke lamp has never sat so pretty!)

In a nutshell, I would say her top tips are the following:

  • don't confine yourself to being matchy-matchy, just make sure you've got some balance and unity in color scheme to pull it all together

  • mix vintage pieces with new for character

  • don't go color crazy - narrow it down to a few key, dominant colors

Designing a space is similar to piecing a look together. What was the foundation for your bedroom design and how did you layer from there?

The foundation for my bedroom design was absolutely the headboard! It was the first piece I committed to so it was my reference point in choosing everything else. An oversized tufted headboard with gilded edges lends itself to a more refined, traditional look but I wanted to add a little funk and fun so I threw in the palm print x-benches!

What items do you recommend investing in a room design & where would you save?

Rugs are a great place to save, especially if you can find one in the 75% OFF section on Rugs USA like I did! Then, I got the look of Restoration Hardware drapery rods with a much more affordable Amazon find. I splurged on my light fixture because I knew it would totally transform the space!

What home stores should we check out when we visit Dallas?

Nest, Mecox , Blue Print

Tastemaker Tour with Anna Matthews

I love stumbling upon new designers, bloggers, & artisans with inspiring aesthetics. Usually I discover these tastemakers via Pinterest or Instagram but on other happy occasions it’s when they are incorporating our décor into their own home or a client's. Often these designers share my love of color and pattern & I become mildly obsessed with them, including

Anna Matthews, who I’m chatting with today while we tour her Summer House project.

From looking at the beautiful range of your portfolio, it’s quite evident that you design with your client’s needs & aesthetics top of mind.

How do you ensure their personalities are reflected in the spaces?

I always want the spaces I design to reflect my client, not me. I want their friends to walk in and say “ Oh this is so you!”. I find that each client is drawn to a certain style and it’s my job to figure out how to deliver that vibe while educating and expanding their aesthetic view. I really try to get to know each client and learn where they are from, what they do for a living, how they entertain, what their everyday routines are. A home full of kiddos jumping on the sofa is approached much differently than a condo for a bachelor!

When clients trust that I will represent them, and are ready to go all in, even with a few risks, they really get the best results.

How has having grown up in the South affected your design style?

Growing up in the south with multiple parents with amazing taste taught me the value of antiques, editing, investing in the best, and the importance of entertaining well. I really believe that what you surround yourself with affects your life. Creating a great space to spend time with friends and family enhances every moment. You should eat breakfast in a space that makes you happy, host dinner parties in a room that inspires fun, and sleep in a room that is rejuvenating!

You clearly enjoy incorporating some bold colors into your designs – blush pink walls, vivid turquoise drapes, to name a few. How do you convince the hesitant client to trust your vision for such happy hues?

I love pattern, especially in wallpapers in smaller spaces, but my boldest color spaces have actually come to life thanks to a few clients that requested the risk! No convincing required! The pink living room I designed for one of my favorite clients was pink because the homeowner fell in love with Farrow & Ball’s Pink Ground and had a grey velvet sofa to anchor the space. So we let the walls, and the commissioned art by Jenny Prinn, be the showstoppers and layered lots of grey throughout the room. The tassel lamps were originally vetoed by my client but I had to bring them in during installation. I mean, they are tassel lamps! And thankfully she loved them! It always pays off to take a little leap of faith.

What interior designers do you admire & why?

Ohh there are so many. Tom Scheerer, Markham Roberts, Ashley Whittaker, Steven Gambrel. I love designers that mix traditional with modern in a way that feels warm. And designers that take risks that inspire new ideas: Miles Redd, Barrie Benson, Carrier & Co.

And of course, my stepmom Jane Schwab who does timeless design to perfection.

Tastemaker Tour with Kirsten Krason

In the excitement for this fall's One Room Challenge reveals tomorrow (and linking participants Thursday), I thought I'd throwback to this adorable design by the ever talented Kirsten Krason of House of Jade. Kirsten designed this sweet space in last season's ORC for her daughter Jane & of course I was thrilled that she incorporated our Fuchsia brushstroke lamp in the space! I've been a fan of Kirsten's for years so chatting design with her was long overdue.

Tell us about little lady Jane's bedroom you designed!

Jane's room was such a fun space for me! I love kid's rooms because you can go really bold with color.  The room is small so I had to be careful with where I brought in the wow factor. I chose to create a focal point with some oversized art and then punch it up with colorful pillows, a pink chair and a teal rug.  I opted for a toddler bed instead of a twin because the room is so teeny.  To balance out all the color I kept the dresser and bed white.

Having started off your design career as an individual designer with 6th Street Design School, how does the design process differ now that you’re partnered with Erin Morgan for House of Jade Interiors? What are the highlights, any challenges?

As with any transition there were some growing pains but overall the process of turning my own business into the House of Jade brand has been amazing! Erin is one of my best friends so we are really comfortable with each other.  We bounce ideas off each other really well now.  It took awhile to get our design minds in sync but now most of our projects flow really seamlessly.  She brings a different eye to the table which helps broaden our designs. I gravitate towards colors and she loves neutrals so it's been fun to blend our two styles. The best part of working with your best friend is that it makes work fun!

You are a master at mixing textiles in your designs! How do you approach picking out patterns and colors for your client’s spaces?

I always like to start with a color scheme and go from there.  If there are too many bold patterns I'll throw in a solid to break it up or some good neutrals. I think the key is to not worry about it being perfect. Oftentimes it's the most unexpected patterns and colors that look best together.  Just be careful with pattern scale so nothing competes with anything else.

Any favorite home décor stores in Salt Lake City you can recommend to our readers?

When we are shopping for clients we always make a stop at Alice Lane! We also love Nest Boutique in South Jordan for fun and unique finds.  Anthropologie has all kinds of treasures as well. If we are looking for some vintage items we love Home Again.

Tastemaker Tour with Robin Titus

We are delighted to be chatting with interior designer Robin Titus of R Titus designs today! Robin recently used our coral brushstroke lamps in her client's master bedroom design and one look you'll see why we had to hear more about her divine approach to design!

How would you describe your aesthetic? Did living in Palm Beach influence your color palette or approach to your designs?

Over all I’d say my style is traditional with a lot of texture and pattern. The setting has been set since I was a young girl playing barbies in my mother’s “formal” living room. Since that time the traditional floor plan has always stuck with me. Both being born and raised in Florida as well as getting my start with Interior Design in Palm Beach have influenced me greatly. I have always been in love with the colorful but my Palm Beach clientele gave me the floral/shell/birds/pink addiction for sure! I’ll never forget my first male client telling me "more pink in the design".

Tell us about this gorgeous bedroom you recently designed!

Well first of all this is my favorite client. (Don’t tell the others I said that) This Master Bedroom is a vacation retreat for a lovely Lady from the South. The starting point for this room is the beautiful Quadrille China Seas fabric that we used for the drapery. The fabric is a hand printed linen that while soft in person is still very colorful. The accents and furniture flowed from there. Like your brushstroke lamps. The chair was an antique, once loved chair we had painted and reupholstered. After picking the paint for that chair I immediately pictured your lamps. The room is on the West side of home so it doesn’t get a ton of natural light. The pops of bright color are perfect for this.

Top design tip for the non-professional?

Whatever space you are designing, have a jumping off point that you always refer back to. Such as, a vintage plate in which the pattern or colors sing to you. When you start selecting items for the room keep that plate in mind. If it meshes for you then you will love it and your room will feel cohesive. Don’t be afraid to go overboard because you can always edit. Actually editing is a must!

Tell us about your amazing pagoda finials! How did that product idea come to mind?

My little pagodas are so fun I love them! I was searching for finials and wanted pagodas but could not find any. So I went on a mad hunt and found a source for the little buildings. My hubby and I have a bad habit of “if you can’t find it make it”. So far the gold have been the most popular. Any color is possible though just ask. And of course they look perfecto on a Jana Bek Lamp;)

Any favorite home décor stores in South Florida or Boston you can recommend to our readers?

In South Florida I love Circa Who. The shop is in Northwood Village in West Palm Beach which has several rummage, vintage dealer shops and cute restaurants. Of course there is Antique Row in WPB which is never a disappointment.

Circa Who

In Boston I love all of the vintage fairs. There are a ton like Brimfield, a huge antique show twice a year. The Mill in Norwood, MA and Adam’s Farm in Walpole, MA both are weekend markets.

We are delighted that Robin could share her insights & tips with us today! You can peruse Robin's beautiful portfolio here and you can find her on Instagram here. Also, Robin is accepting wholesale accounts for her adorable finials! Email her if you are interested!)

Robin recently moved to Chicago so if you are in the area & in need of design help, you're in luck!
